Lala
Miya Das Bhalla
had two sons named Lala Dhanpat Rai Bhalla and Lala
Hira Nand Bhalla. And Lala Dhanpat Rai Bhalla had two sons
named Lala kishen Dayal Bhalla and Lala Shanker Das
Bhalla. And Lala Hira Nand Bhalla had a one son Lala
Bishen Das Bhalla.
All
Family members of Lala Dhanpat Rai Bhalla and Lala
Hira Nand Bhalla lived (joint family) in a same house till February
1931 and Lala Kishen Dayal Bhalla built an Empire and became one of the known
wealthy family in the area they acquired Farming land
in surrounding area of Sri Hargobindpur and at Bakhu
Nangal located at Kartarpur Kapurthala Road, Four (4)
miles from Kartarpur city Dist. Jullundur (Jalandhar)
and bought a property (Kothi) in Multan (now in
Pakistan). After the death of Lala Dhanpat Rai and
Lala Hira Nand Bhalla then Lala Shanker Das Bhalla son
of Lala Dhanpat Rai Bhalla the younger brother of Lala
Kishen Dayal Bhalla also died.
After the death of
their father's and brother,
both the cousins Lala Kishen Dayal Bhalla and Lala
Bishen Das Bhalla managed the family affairs and
business jointly with each others consultation. Lala
Kishen Dayal was responsible for all the financial
activates and Lala Bishen Das Bhalla was fully in
charge of the Administration, because he was educated
and socially he was very active. But he always
respected his cousin Lala Kishen Dayal Bhalla without
his consultation he never took any decision or action
by himself in family affairs or any business matters
till 1931.
Both the cousin's Lala Kishen Dayal Bhalla and Lala Bishen Das
Bhalla were Pakka “Arya Samajis” and Lala Bishen Das Bhalla was the president of the Arya
Samaj Sri Hargobindpur, and also he was the life
member of the
ARYA
PRATINIDHI
SABHA PUNJAB
SAMBANDHAK COMMITTEE.
Both the cousins were
educationist, and
social reformer
and very well known in
District Gurdaspur and around Punjab.
In February 1931 Lala Durga Das Bhalla
and Lala Dev Dutt Bhalla pressured their father Lala
Bishen Das Bhalla without the consent of Pandit Bhim
Sain Bhalla to become independent and divide the
assets from Lala Kishen Dayal Bhalla then both the cousin
thought and made their wise decision that now
it’s the time to separate and divide the family assets
because both of them aged and their health was also not permitting
them to look
after the family business and then family has grown up
big. So they did not wanted that after their death the
families will not be able to continue the business as
both cousin's managed till this time. They decided to
divide the assets among themselves jointly without any
outsiders (third person's) involvement. Eventually there was
some problems between their children occurred that who wants what and how to
divide the assets. They could not able to divide the property and business by
themselves.
Then they had to
involve third person "Arbitrator" They decided to
involve Lala Daya Ram Khosla prominent person an
a elder brother of Lala Atma Ram Khosla (son-in-law)
of Lala Bishen Das Bhalla to become an "Arbitrator"
and his decision shall be the final and both parties
has to fully agree with his decision and both have to
accept. So, it took them approximately six moths to
divide the family assets in 1931. Every thing did not
go smoothly their were lot of fights and bickering
between the children of both families but anyway it
was the right time they separated and divided the
assets in two parts 50% went to Lala Bishen Das Bhalla
and other 50% to Lala Kishen Dayal Bhalla and Lala
Shanker Das Bhalla’s heirs.
Lala Bishen Bhalla
died on December 06, 1936 he had a three sons Lala Durga Das
Bhalla, Babu Dev Dutt
Bhalla, Pandit Bhim Sain Bhalla (Vidyalankar). One of
his son Babu Dev Dutt Bhalla was at the time working for Indian Railway
in Lahore (now in Pakistan) immediately he resigned
his job and came back to Sri Hargobindpur and demanded
his one third share of the property from his elder
brother Lala Durga Das Bhalla and separated and built
his own house and lived their with his family Lala
Durga Das did not discuss or consulted with his younger brother Pandit Bhim Sain Bhalla (Vidyalankar)
who was also at that time living in Lahore with his
family.
And Lala Durga Das was controlling Pandit Bhim
Sain Bhalla (Vidyalankar) share of property. After the partition
between India
and Pakistan in 1947 Pandit Bhim Sain Bhalla
(Vidyalankar) came back from Lahore (now in Pakistan)
and asked his elder brother Lala Durga Das Bhalla about
his share of income since 1936. And one third share of
the property . Lala Durga Das did not gave him any
positive answer for sometime about the income. So Pandit ji being a simple and
honest person he did not questioned anymore to his
elder brothers and he always respected him and all of
his family including his "Tau ji's" Lala Kishen Dayal
Bhalla and "Chacha" Lala Shanker Das Bhalla's heirs till he
lived.
Lala Kishen Dayal Bhalla's
first wife Shmt. Basant Kaur died in 1885 and they
were blessed with one son named Shiv Das Bhalla. Lala
Kishen Dayal Bhalla went to Haridwar in year 1885 to immerse the Ashes of his First wife
Shmt. Basant Kaur in
Ganges. And again he visited Haridwar in year
1889 with his younger brother Lala Shanker Das Bhalla.
Lala Kishen Dayal
Bhalla remarried to (Veero Kahar) "Mehar Kaur" and
they were blessed with Nine (9) Children Five (5) girls and
Four (4) boys. Lala Kishen Dayal Bhalla died in 1939 and his youngest son Lala Shanti Swroop Bhalla went
to Haridwar in 1939 to immerse the Ashes of his father in Ganges.
After the death of
Lala Kishen Dayal Bhalla
his Elder son Lala Roshan Lal Bhalla became the head
of the family. All the four brothers Lala Roshan Lal
Bhalla, Lala Prithvi Raj Bhalla, Lala Sukhdev Raj
Bhalla and Lala shanti Swroop Bhalla lived (joint
family) together
with their families in one house. In 1947 after the
partition between India and Pakistan "The Bhalla
Clan" suffered a big financial setback (loses) due
to all the money was lender to Muslim Zamidar's
(farmer's) and
all of them left the country and it became impossible
for the family to look after even the farming land
because they all were depended on the Muslim Zamidar's
(farmer's).
But the family servants knew most of the land
locations and dealings etc. So with their help all the
four brothers carried along together for some time and
then it became difficult for the families to stay
together (jointly) because, Lala Roshan Lala Bhalla told his
other three brothers to go and find a job and take
care of your families he was the only person in the
family who was controlling the family assets and then
his mother pressured Lala Roshan Lal Bhalla to divide
the property and give them their
share and also to Lala Shanker Das Bhalla's wife
Smt. Lakshmi Devi Bhalla Or her son Lala Jagdish Ram
Bhalla but again it was very difficult to divide the
assets and it was not so easy to bring Lala Roshan Lal
Bhalla to agree the terms that he will divide the
assets 50% to Lala Shanker Das Bhalla's heirs and 50 %
Lala Kishen Dayal Bhalla heirs (i.e.) to all four
brothers.
But Lala Roshan Lal Bhalla and
his youngest brother Lala Shanti Swroop Bhalla did not agree to this decision
at all and
they divided the property in five parts instead of
fifty percent to Lala Kishen Dayal
Bhalla's heirs and other fifty percent to Lala shanker
Das Bhalla's heirs.
So one fifth share was given to Lala
Jagdish Ram Bhalla the only survivor of Lala
Shanker Das Bhalla who was at the time working for
Indian Railway Department at Delhi. Lala Shanker Das
Bhalla had a three sons but Lala Bhagat Ram Bhalla and
Lala Jagat Ram Bhalla both were married and died at
an early age but they did not had any children. Lala
Jagdish Ram Bhalla the only survivor of Lala Shanker Das
Bhalla Looked after his mother Lakshmi Devi and both the
sister-in-law's till he died most of the time all of
them stayed in Delhi.
Now most all of "The Bhalla
Clan" family members had sold their farming land except
the other property such as houses, shops, Havali's
etc. and left Sri Hargobindpur for the good.
Both
the cousin brothers had a family friend named Lala Ulhas Rai in Batala he was also very well known and a wealthy man owned
a lot of property and business at one time he was a
partner in business with Lala Kishen Dayal Bhalla and
Lala Bishen Das Bhalla. But unfortunately sometime in
1930's he became insolvent and his main property named
"ULHAS RAI MARKET" in Batala was on auction and Lala
Kishen Dayal Bhalla and Lala Bishen Das Bhalla Came to
know the auction date and both the cousin's showed up
at the auction and lot of other wealthy people's around
Punjab and other places were present to bid the
property and every one started bidding and after
watching sometime Lala Kishen Dayal Bhalla raised
his sliver walking stick and gave his bid not in
figure's but said From his house door step
to this Market door step (19 miles distance) set
adjoining One
Rupee silver coin in a row whatever the amount is
that's my bid. Auctioneer became impatient and did
not want to accept this bid. But Lala Kishen Dayal
Bhalla told him it is up to you to figure it out the
bid amount. Then after two hours discussion with his
other collogues Auctioneer called of the auction and
Lala Ulhas Rai got sometime extension to raise the
funds to pay off his debts. so "ULHAS RAI MARKET" was
not auctioned and Lala Ulhas Rai was so obligated to
both the brothers but in reply Lala Kishen Dayal said
it was not your reputation we are also part of it we
both eat together knew each other so well and how we
can sleep comfortably if our friend is in trouble.
Lala
Kishen Dayal Bhalla and his cousin Lala Bishen Das Bhalla in Year 1914
donated Cash Rs. 20,000/=and Land to District Board to upgrade existing
Middle School to High School and then Punjab's
Lieutenant
Governor Sir Michael O'dwyer acknowledge the
donation and built a High School for boys, which was named D.B. High School (District Board High School) (now is called Govt. High
School) in Sri Hargobindpur, Dist. Gurdaspur, Punjab, India.
Lala
Kishen Dayal Bhalla and his cousin Lala Bishen Das Bhalla in the memory of
their mothers Smt. Karam Devi and Smt. Uttam Devi had opened a charitable Kanya Pathshala (Girls Junior High School) with Home science
courses in Sri Hargobindpur, Dist. Gurdaspur, Punjab, India.
Lala
Kishen Dayal Bhalla and his cousin Lala Bishen Das Bhalla had opened a charitable Aushdalhya (dispensary) in the name of Kishen Dayal Bishen Das Dharm Arth Aushdalya in
Sri Hargobindpur, Dist. Gurdaspur, Punjab, India.
During the Bengal
Famine
both the cousins Lala Kishen Dayal Bhalla and Lala
Bishen Das Bhalla
donated food grains which were stored in the deep
well-like granaries (Bhallian da Khate) are a
well-known sight at Sri Hargobindpur.

Kishen Dayal Bhalla had established a wedding parties requirement and bought the utensils, cooking pots and all other requirements for 100 people including
Vadi, Silver Mukat and Gulabdani
etc in Sri Hargobindpur, Dist.Gurdaspur, Punjab, India.
Lala
Kishen Dayal Bhalla and his cousin Lala Bishen Das Bhalla and family presented a
Kurta, Pajama and Shawl (Shirt, Pajama and Shawl) in the year
1906 to Swami Shradhanand Ji Religious leader, preacher of Arya Samaj and
founder of Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidalaya and also
Lala Bishen Das Bhalla promised swami ji he
will donate his son Bhim Sain Bhalla to
start and built Gurukul Kangri Vishwadalaya when he visited Sri Hargobindpur, Dist. Gurdaspur, Punjab, India.
Pandit Bhim Sain Bhalla (Vidyalankar)
youngest son of Lala Bishen Das Bhalla was born in
Jammu on October 22, 1900. At the age of 6 in 1906 his
father Lala Bishen Das Bhalla sent him to Gurukul

The life ebbed out of this great man on July 18, 1962
